How To Maintain Your Trees

Know Their Needs

Mature trees are a wonder in your yard and will be a valuable commodity as they take a long time to establish. If you have trees in your yard, you need to know how to maintain them to ensure that they mature and stay healthy. There are a number of points that you should consider when looking to maintain your trees.

The first step to maintaining your trees is ensuring that you know what they need. You should research and take notes about what each type of tree that you have needs in terms of water and soil type. This is vital to maintaining correct moisture levels and to ensure that the tree is planted in the correct place.

You also need to consider what your tree is sensitive to. There are some trees that are sensitive to salt spray, high winds or root competition from other plants. When you know what these sensitivities are, you can take steps to remove them from the environment when possible. Of course, if you live in an area with high wind, you might want to consider getting a different tree for your yard as there is little you can do regarding this.

Protect The Tree Bark

The bark of the tree is the armor that protects it and any damage to the bark can lead to fungus or bacterial infections. When this happens, your tree could start to rot from the inside out. To protect the bark of your trees, call a tree doctor so you need to know what could damage it.

If you have any rotary spray heads which hit the trunk in the same place at close range, the water could damage the bark. To overcome this, you should redirect the spray arc so that it does not directly hit the trunk of the tree. Another piece of equipment that can damage the bark is lawn equipment such as a weed whacker. To ensure this does not happen, you should steer the lawn equipment away from the trunk of the tree.

It is not only machines and yard equipment that could damage the bark. The tree itself could also damage its own bark and the most common way for this to happen is with rubbing branches. If there are 2 branches that are entwined and rub against each other, it could create a wound. To overcome this issue, you should prune your trees correctly.

Maintain Healthy Soil

Healthy soil will ensure that your trees are healthy and getting all the nutrients that they need. One of the best ways to maintain healthy soils is to mulch around the trees. You can use purchased mulch or create your own with the leaves that have fallen from the trees. The mulch should only be 2 to 4 inches deep as any deeper mulching will smother the roots. It is important to note that you keep the mulch away from the trunk and root flare as this could cause problems and excessive moisture close to the trunk.
